Double Elvis
First Elvis
As a child, Andy Warhol was captivated by celebrities. He collected an entire album filled with photos of famous people and at age nine he began to create paintings of them. It wasn’t until age 29, in 1957, that Warhol painted his first portrait of Elvis, the king of rock and roll.
Beginning his career as a commercial artist, the first Elvis-related work by Andy Warhol was from a spread in Life magazine in 1957, titled Crazy Golden Slippers, featuring a collection of shoes inspired by different celebrities. The boots inspired by Elvis in this piece are gold, decorated with lace and stars.
