Double Elvis

Series

Warhol silk-screened many copies of Elvis’ image onto a long roll of plain canvas to create this series. When Warhol sent the roll of “Elvises” to the galleries for installation, he requested that the images be cut and hung at the gallery’s discretion. Warhol also told them that he wanted the multiple Elvis portraits to be densely hung around the gallery. Thirteen years after the creation of the left panel of Double Elvis, and for the occasion of an exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum, Warhol decided to add the second blank panel by painting the canvas background silver.
